Writer's Block: Dream or Reality?

Dec. 7th, 2010 | 01:02 pm

What do you think really happened at the end of the movie Inception? Have you ever had a dream that you confused with reality?

I stick by the idea that he did escape the dream. Mostly this is just because I prefer the immensely powerful message of hope it gives Cobbs story. Despite this I would have preferred a straightforward ending, even if it had been a negative one.

I think the "trick" ending was the absolute weakest part of the movie, and really, really should not have been done. The movie was amazing, beautiful and meaningful, and it didn't need any sort of "deep" questions about whether he was ultimately in  dream or reality. The emotional impact of the characters' journeys were far more powerful than the pop-philosophy silliness they tried to invoke at the end, and ultimately it sort of muted the impact that Cobb's story in particular could've had. Imagine the emotional message of his story if they made it clear that he did make it out. Imagine the emotional message of his story if they made it clear that he hadn't made it out. Either would have been more meaningful than the "is it a dream or reality" question.

(Default userpic hilariously on point FTW.)

Epic DS9 post ST:XI original universe fic in the works?

mood: excitedexcited

So, yeah. Last night I got into a really huge discussion with some people about "What would happen to the situation in the Alpha Quadrant when the Romulan Empire is wiped out?" I mean, if you think about the fact that this is just 12 years after the Dominion War... and how important DS9 was in maintaining the balance of power in the Alpha Quadrant...

Anyway, the result of this is that we're now going to be creating/writing/beta-ing an amazingly awesome fic about it. Seriously, the degree of thought and planning we are putting into it, into the politics, the people, the fact of at least two different space/time disturbances...I think it would make any DS9 fan very, very, very happy. Haha, I'm resisting the urge to start telling ya'll all the details, but yeah. If we manage to really get it done, the story will be so much better without spoilers.

So yeah. If we have people who would be interested in reading it, I think that would be a big factor in getting it done, for real.

(Note: So far as I know we're going to focus on the television and film canon only. This won't include people/events from the DS9 relaunch books. It would however, include nearly everyone from DS9, and possibly a couple people from TNG and Voyager. We are going to be working very hard to stick to the canon of the original universe, taking the fact that the events implied in the original universe in ST:XI (I.E. the destruction of the Romulan star system, and disappearance of Ambassador Spock) did occur, but we will not be dealing with the resulting AU.)
